A Family Project of Love
We are the Johnsons family, from the UK & Hong Kong. We have lived in Phuket since July, 2022. We choose to reside in Phuket for its natural lifestyle and holistic medical treatment for our son Max, who is a brain cancer survivor.
Despite the medical resources and support we received for Max, we struggled to find a school that can provide him education and, at the same time, the intensive rehabilitation that he needs. Max has mobility issues, speech challenges and developmental delay, resulting from multiple brain surgeries, after discovering a tumour in his brain when he was a toddler.
We spent months to find various specialists in different places on the island to meet Max’s needs. Initially, we thought we would home-school him, as most schools do not have the right physical environment. However, soon we realised Max was much happier when he was with other children. Indeed, emotional growth and social development is an important aspect of a child’s development that we should not ignore. The only place we thought that was safe enough was a playroom, where measures have been taken to offer a child-proof space for children to play in. As a result, we had been taking him to different playrooms in Phuket while arranging rehabilitation with different therapists.
We Are Here to Help
During our time spent here, we noticed there are also other families in similar situations, either having special needs children or staying in Phuket for an indeterminate time with no access to regular schooling. That was when we made a decision to centralise everything we have found to help Max and other children like him to create a place where he can learn and focus on his rehabilitation. The concept of Maximise was born, to connect rehabilitation with education.
After living with Max’s condition for years, we understand more than anyone the importance to treat not only the child, but the whole family. We adopt a holistic approach to give families support. We would love to share our experience with other parents and caretakers who have special needs children, besides providing therapy and education.
We truly believe by offering the right assessment and support, every family can Maximise the benefit of their time here in Phuket and enjoy life on this paradise island, like we do.
